December 2004 Archives

Christmas came and went so fast and I realize I am not a kid anymore. No wonder the adults always looked so tired after it ended and no wonder we would find people asleep on the floor after Christmas dinner. But then again it is always the men of the family who fall asleep and they do that whenever we get together, holiday or not. (I'm stil not sure why).

I finished all of the gifts for people and they came out better than I could have imagined. Here are some of the pictures I took of the table that I made for my cousin Elisa (yes it used to be an old surfboard), it has been given a new life now...(yes, it now has flip up wooden legs attached to it and has no more wax residue and a better paint job).

I have said countless prayers for those victimized by the tsunami in Asia. Please do the same or help out of you can. You can donate on various websites, including Amazon.

I was up really early this morning. Well maybe not that early but I am a person who would rather stay up all night than get up before 7 or 8 (still early but you gotta do what you gotta do). But this particular morning, I was awake before my dog at 5:45 in the morning. What the heck is wrong with me? Its not even like I went to bed early, I fell asleep at 1:30 or so. So whats up? Who knows. But I remembered I had left some Christmas present stuff in my truck so as I went out to get it, I noticed the sky. Things like the morning sky at that moment make me yearn for a digital camera. It was a beautiful soft blue with streaks of pink and dusky purple. I was amazed- I always see the sunset- but I hardly ever see the sunrise.

Its crazy how many times I have missed the sunrise. I stopped to think this morning, that my dad witnessed this every day. I wonder how many times he actually looked up to see all the colors in the sky? See, my dad was a cement finisher and in construction work you are usually at work before the sun rises. I remember that he would leave as early as 3 am to get to a job in Fallbrook or Thousand Oaks or Moreno Valley (this list could go on forever). This morning just made me think of him and how he can relax and enjoy the sunrise now...

I have been crazy busy lately so I have not posted. I must admit, I kinda missed blogging. Once you get into it- its very therapeutic. Most of the time I forget that people can and are reading my random thoughts. So my thoughts may at times be raw and un-edited( I am not apologizing I just thought you should know).

My poor momma has been in the hospital and gracias por Dios, she is home now and recovering. It may take awhile (lack of oxygen is no joke) but I hope it goes fast for her (lying in bed is driving her crazy) and besides its almost Christmas.

I told you this mess was gonna happen (those who laughed at me for making lists in the middle of Spetember- you know who you are). Christmas is almost here! Crazy Christmas always tries to mess with my head. Its so far away and then BAM it hits you. And my whole purpose for scaring all of you who haven't finished their shopping is that, I, of course am not done yet.... DANG IT...

But I refuse to trip off of it. I will get everything done because there is no other option. It will get done and dammit it will be beautiful....

Here is a short list of things that I am feeling right now:

1. The Ellen De Generes show- I love to see her dance, its the funniest thing cause she doesn't care how silly she looks.

2. Christmas presents waiting to be wrapped- of course, they are strewn all over my room

3. Mighty Goods Gift List- full of crazy good idea- if you are stuck I suggest you print it out

4. Martinez bookstore- I love this book store in Santa Ana. I told y'all its all about the Latinos

5. Heavy D- Ok, so the Overweight Lover has been in the production room lately and he hasn't had an actual album out in awhile. But I re-discovered his Nuttin But Love cd and I remember why I used to love him.

I better get back to work, but I will write more later, later... Not right now, right now...

Congratulations to my cousin Jen and her husband Yomi. Jen had a baby girl yesterday in Brooklyn, New York at 3:05 (Eastern time of course)- 7lbs 9 oz. Little Maya is healthy and beautiful from what I hear..... Congratulations also goes to my Nino and Nina- they are grandparents. Oh and my grandma who is a great grandma... (Yeah, this could go on forever, so I am just going to stop now).

Say a prayer for my momma. She had a bad asthma attack and was emmitted to the hospital on Tuesday (after 8 hours of waiting in the smallest ER ever built). She will probably be there until Friday...

basquiat2.jpg

Last night I watched the movie, Basquiat again (I think I have seen it ten thousand times). I am continually amazed by Jeffrey Wright's performance as Jean-Michael Basquiat, one of the greatest painters that modern art has ever seen- in my opinion at least). I love his work with colors and graffitti like qualities.

I used to aspire to have work similar to his- but I soon figured out that the only work I could do was my own and to emualte others would only be a slight reproduction and in no way would it be the as great as the first. I am very inspired by Basquiat and his tragic life but as an artist (I think I can finally call myself this), but I know that you can't just reproduce someone's style to be an artist. I am most satisfied when my work represents the heart of me. And that may change due to experiences and life but if its not 100% me then I am never satisfied with it. So in satisfying myself I think my work has grown.

Basquiat had such a hard time satisfying others because he forgot it was about him. He was so young and he tried to make others happy, which is impossible in a world of art dealers and rich art collectors who will drop you the second that your fifteen minutes are up. Sad that drugs ended his life at 27 years old. I would have liked to see his later works. But maybe true genius never stays long- its too intense...

by the way- it's raining :)

Happy Birthday to mi prima Emilie. Yay- the girl is finally 21! Took her forever, I swear...

Here are some funny things about Emilie-

1. The girl is the worst gift wrapper in the world- she individually wrapped the straps of a purse!

2. She walks into walls (to her credit she was still half asleep)

3. She's like a gremlin (except she turns crazy after 8pm)

4. She had a kitten but she washed it too many times and it got sick so she had to give it back to the lady she got it from

5. She says "ectercise" instead of exercise and brefast instead of breakfast(no one knows why)

6. If you ever meet her, tell her to do the hoola hoop dance- its great (she pretends to swirl one on her neck and its funny)

7. When she was a baby, her mom fed her too many orange foods and as a result she turned orange (bright orange).

8. She is a great cousin and more like my sister than anything (although people never believe that we are related- and yes we are cousins by blood not marriage!)

Happy Birthday Em- hope you are having fun.....

So last night I was ready to blog, but I noticed that I had 376 comments. I discovered that it wasn't people just leaving nice little notes. It was spam comments (those bastards!) I got things like bikini.com and mini.com. Um ok... Actually its not okay. Those things pissed me off. I had to delete two hundred comments. Not so fun I tell you. It took me awhile but its done and I closed all the comments on all of my older blogs. So if you want to leave comments you will have to do it on the 5 or so most recent posts- sorry but otherwise i get crazy spam (no joke).
